Folding Kinetic Roof System

Adaptive structures for outdoor and urban spaces

Retractable kinetic structures for outdoor corporate and urban spaces.

Engineered for climatic adaptability: The system fully retracts into the column to protect against tropical storms and high winds, and folds away in Nordic winters to avoid snow load while preserving unobstructed open-air spaces.

Monumental and large-scale sculptures

Sculptures that transform space

Large-scale kinetic sculptures conceived for lobbies, atriums, and architectural environments.

Folding Kinetic Roof System

Adaptive structures for outdoor and urban spaces

Retractable kinetic structures designed to provide shade, define spaces, and create dynamic visual experiences in corporate, industrial, and public environments.

The system consists of three main elements:

  • Folding Kinetic Roof
  • Sculptural Seating
  • Ornamental Railings
  • Urban Infrastructure Ecosystems

Key Features:

  • Fully adaptable to different environments (inland, coastal, or industrial)
  • Engineered for extreme weather conditions
  • Dynamic kinetic visual effect

A sculptural and functional solution that transforms outdoor spaces into memorable environments.

Heritage & Continuity

The integration of art, engineering, and architecture into unified built systems has important precedents in the kinetic and geometric art movement. Artists such as Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, Alejandro Otero, Juvenal Ravelo, Mateo Manaure, and Leonel Durán transformed ports, hydroelectric infrastructure, airports, highways, and urban corridors into perceptual environments where structure, movement, color, and visual experience became inseparable from the architecture itself.

From the chromatic interventions of Carlos Cruz-Diez at the Port of La Guaira and the Guri Hydroelectric Dam, to the spatial investigations of Jesús Rafael Soto and the monumental civic works of Alejandro Otero, all in Venezuela, these projects demonstrated that artistic vision could operate not as decoration, but as a structural and perceptual component of infrastructure itself. BKS continues this methodology through site-specific systems developed in collaboration with engineers, fabricators, and technical specialists. Each project translates natural phenomena into architectural structures that integrate climate response, movement, and perceptual interaction into long-life spatial environments. The lineage is Venezuelan. The application is universal.

Why BKS

BKS creates site-specific architectural systems where geometry, light, and movement transform how a space is experienced. Through layered surfaces and kinetic visual effects, each installation changes perceptually depending on movement, position, and time of day.

Rather than producing standard architectural elements, BKS develops long-life spatial systems that merge art, climate responsiveness, and infrastructure into environments with lasting identity. Each project is led creatively by José Bonilla and executed alongside specialized collaborators for the project.

The Process

Every BKS system begins from zero. Each product line shares a common engineered foundation. Everything else is developed exclusively for the client and the site: geometry, configuration, movement, pattern, material. No two BKS systems resolve the same way. This is not a limitation. It is the reason the system has value.

Because each installation is genuinely unique, the process cannot skip steps. A functional prototype validates the system at controlled scale. A first full‑scale installation calibrates fabrication, materials, and site variables. Only then does production pricing reflect reality, not projection.

BKS is directed by José Bonilla, with extensive hands-on fabrication experience in complex geometric structures. Each piece has required its own solutions. The structural systems, visual language, and kinetic aesthetics of BKS emerge from that continuous process of design, fabrication, and artistic authorship.

About BKS

Bonilla Kinetic Systems is the architectural extension of my artistic practice. It emerges from more than two decades of research in geometry, kinetics, and abstraction, translating that visual language into architectural systems, urban installations, and mobile structures for corporate, industrial, and public environments.

Unlike a conventional design studio, BKS operates from an artistic logic: each system is a site‑specific work, developed from natural phenomena, territorial patterns, and perceptual dynamics.

Current lines of work include:

- Monumental Sculptures for atriums, lobbies, and institutional spaces.

- Architectural Installations for ceilings, walls, and large interior corridors.

- Folding Kinetic Roof Systems for outdoor and urban environments.

- Acoustic Systems for industrial and architectural perimeters.

BKS is a kinetic language applied to architecture, developed from my visual art practice and adapted to the identity of each territory.
